It was the first day of school for 70 children (38 girls and 32 boys) on October the 3^rd, 2011. They have classes Monday to Friday and Saturday morning, from 7:30 to 12:30 and then from 3:00 to 5:30.

Thanks to the excellent work of our director, we have been able to get the official authorisation of the opening of the LAP from the Ministry of Secondary Education.

Out of the 70 children, 51 have a tutor with whom they live with, since the school is too far from their own village. After a few days, the director realised that the children had a problem to stay awake after 10 AM. He found out that only one of the 70 kids had breakfast. The children staying with their tutors have to cook their own food and they did not take time to do so or they did not have any food to prepare. We have decided to give the children a 1/3 of a baguette with blue band. This really helped the children.

In the end of October we had the first meeting with the parents. There were 58 parents present, some had travelled 55 km to come to the meeting. We can derive from the remarks of the parents that the children are really motivated to go to school. Each morning they are the first one to be up, and they prepare themselves to go school without any pushing of the parents. In addition when they are coming home around 6PM they wash themselves and immediately start to study. Other children in the family going to primary schools or other schools have no choice but to study also.

As you have seen on the pictures of the children, boys and girls come completely shaved to school. The school asked the girls to wear earrings to distinguish them from the boys. Parents find this a very good idea because this costs less money for hair dressing.

The school has 2 permanent teachers and 5 temporary ones. We have built so far the house for the director and one house with 4 bedrooms for the temporary teachers.

The children have already passed their first tests. Results should be there in a week.

The Opening of LAP!

After a lot of hard work, we can finally announce; The Opening of LAP!

The opening will take place on the 3rd of October 2011. The first generation will consist of 37 girls and 33 boys. The buildings have been inspected by the ministry of secondary studies, and they confirmed that the opening can take place!

Meeting with Students & Parents

On Monday August 15th, a meeting for all the students with their parents was planned at the LAP site. The objectives were to complete the information given to the students and the parents, to measure the students for their uniforms and to get the information of the students families. At this meeting 6 parents paid the tuition fees for their kids.

From the 70 kids 3 were missing. The 67 who were there could fill in their family information, got there measurement and picture taken. All the parents were impressed by the on-going construction.

Student Selection LAP

The selection of the students has been completed. The parents of the selected children had until the 5^th of August to confirm their children’s participation in this school. We held a meeting in the villages in advance in order to better communicate with the parents and give them the complete information. We were surprised to see the high level of motivation for the LAP since all parents gave their signed letter during those meetings.

There are 37 girls and 33 boys listed for the LAP.

Recruiting Students

On Tuesday the 12th of July, 231 kids took a test to see if they will be admitted to the new agricultural school (LAP). The test consisted of mixed questions from general studies (Math, French), to questions on cultural issues and logic.

The house of the director, the house of the part-time teachers and the first class building will soon have a roof and are therefore almost done! The next step will be to build the stable for the cows, the pigsty, the coop and the workshop / garage.

Container on its way to Burkina Faso!

On the 17th of June, the volunteers of ASAP loaded a container full of material for the new agricultural school. The container was filled with a tractor, computers, chairs and tables for the students, books and more!

The director of the LAP got a motorcycle in order to better commute betwen the city of Bobo Dioulasso and the site of the school (50km).
